Description

Nos. 3 and 4 Shaw Street are a pair of houses built around 1820, later converted to offices, with some additions and alterations. They are constructed from pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring gauged red brick flat arches and a stuccoed porch with marble steps. The roof is slate, hipped at the front, and there are tall brick stacks at the front and to the right and rear, with pots on the front stack. The design gives the appearance of a single unit with two central entrances.

The buildings rise three storeys and have four first-floor windows arranged in a 2:2 pattern. The ground and first floors have 8/8 sash windows, while the second floor has 4/8 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with flat arches. The central entrances are within a shared Roman Doric porch, which features three three-quarter engaged columns, a frieze with triglyphs and metopes, guttae, and a pediment. There are two roll-edged steps leading up to six-panel doors, with the upper panels raised and fielded and the lower panels flush reeded, all in similar reveals. The left door retains margin glazing-bars in its overlight. The eaves are wide. The right return has 8/8 and 4/8 sashes where original, along with two round-arched staircase windows featuring 6/6 sashes with radial glazing bars in the heads and margin-lights.

Inside, some original plasterwork remains, but the interior has not been fully inspected. Historically, the site at the corner of Shaw Street and Foregate Street was redeveloped in 1840, which may relate to this development. The buildings share a similar design with No. 6 Shaw Street and Bank House on Farrier Street, and they also form a group with the Assembly Rooms on Shaw Street and Berkeley's Hospital on The Foregate.
