Description
A farmhouse, dating approximately to 1600, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill, replacement walling, and additions, and has machine-tiled roofs. The building has a hall and cross-wing plan. The hall section consists of one framed bay aligned roughly north/south. A large external chimney is at the south end, now enclosed by a 19th-century bay that continues the roof line and has a gable-end stack. The cross-wing is situated at the north gable end, consisting of two framed bays with a large chimney at the west end, featuring a tall stack on the north side of the roof pitch. It is a single-storey building with an attic and dormers, and some parts have a dentilled eaves cornice. The timber framing consists of two panels from sill to wall-plate (only the upper panels are visible externally on the east bay of the cross-wing), with short swept braces in some upper corners. The cross-wing has collar and tie-beam trusses with raking struts. The west front elevation has two ground-floor, 3-light, 20th-century casements on the main part, one with a cambered head in the 19th-century bay. There is also a gabled dormer with a 19th-century 2-light casement. The cross-wing gable end has an attic light and the main entrance, which has a cambered head, a 20th-century door, and a plain transom light. Inside, the roof, rear wall-frame, and cross-frames appear intact. A large fireplace survives in the hall part but is concealed. A winder staircase is located to the east of the hall fireplace. There are 19th-century and 20th-century additions to the north side and rear. Although little framing is exposed externally, much of the original fabric survives, some of which is concealed by light internal cladding and reflects group value.
