Description
The Nash is a house dating from around 1600, with possible earlier elements. It was altered in 1831 and again in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with attics. The south front features a balanced design with two bays on either side of a central two-storey porch, each bay topped with a crow-stepped gable. The current windows are mullioned and transomed, replacing earlier mullioned windows from 1831, as shown in a photograph in the Victoria County History. The windows are generally three lights with a transom, except for the ground floor of the middle bays and the first floor of the right-hand bay, which have four lights. The attic is illuminated by three-light mullioned windows. The porch includes a cross-window on the first floor, a Tudor-arched doorway, and a gable with coping and finials. The chimneys feature diagonal shafts.
The interior was not accessible during the survey in October 1986, but it is reported to contain remnants of timber-framing. The dining room and oak bedroom are said to have oak panelling and plaster ceilings from around 1600, decorated with vine, rose, ash, oak, and thistle in ogee patterns. The oak bedroom is noted for a large painted mantel featuring figures and strapwork dated 1598. The main staircase is believed to be early 18th century, with slim twisted and columnar balusters and carved tread-ends.
