Description
The monument to opera singer Jenny Lind, designed by Charles Bell Birch, is located in Great Malvern Cemetery. It was installed after her death in 1887 and altered following the death of her husband, Otto Goldschmidt, in 1907.
The monument is made of Swedish granite and is set within a pebbled enclosure surrounded by iron railings. It features a wheel cross on a gradually tapering base, which has moulded and carved sections at each level. The main part of the base is inscribed with the following text: "IN LOVING MEMORY OF JENNY MARIA LIND WIFE OF OTTO GOLDSCHMIDT BORN AT STOCKHOLM, OCTOBER 6 1820 DIED AT WYNDS POINT MALVERN NOVEMBER 2 1887 ALSO OF OTTO GOLDSCHMIDT BORN IN HAMBURG AUG 21 1819 DIED IN LONDON FEB 24 1907."
Above this inscription, there is a small carved panel protected by a shallow glass dome. The panel depicts a lyre with the word "EXCELSIOR" beneath it, symbolising excellence in musical arts.
The iron railings around the monument feature intersecting circular sections and fleur de lys finials. Additionally, there is a small plaque set into the gravel that provides information about Jenny Lind's life.
