Description
Ford's Hospital, also known as Greyfriar's Hospital, is an early 16th-century building established in 1509 by the will of William Ford, with additional endowment in 1517 by William Pisford. The date 1529 on the wall likely refers to the appointment of feofees and possibly to further construction between the courtyard and garden.
The structure features a timber frame with an oversailing first floor. It suffered significant damage during an air raid in November 1940 but was rebuilt using original timbers between 1951 and 1953. The building has been altered with additional windows and stone walling facing the street. Notable features include intricate carvings on the timber framework, including miniature buttresses with bases and pinnacles, as well as four-centred arched doorways with carved spandrels. There are oak seats in the corners of the courtyard and rainwater heads dated 1784.
