Description
Nos 52 to 58 on Cash's Lane were built in 1857 as part of Cash's Model Factory. Originally, they were the end section of a continuous terrace that extended from Nos 52 to 110, but now they are only connected at the top floor level by a gallery to Nos 64 to 94. The terrace consists of two-storey houses with a third-storey 'topshop', designed to provide individual workers with a sense of independence within the factory system. The buildings are constructed of brick and feature a tiled roof with ornamental barge-boards on the gable end. There are shallow, wide buttresses between the houses, pointed arched windows with sashes on the lower floors, and tall windows with mullions and transoms on the top floor. The doors are boarded and set under pointed arches. In 1862, the individual shops were converted into one large factory. Nos 52 to 58, along with Nos 64 to 94 and 112 to 140 on Cash's Lane, form a group with 251 Kingfield Road.
