Description
The Alderman's Green War Memorial is located in front of Alderman’s Green Free Methodists’ church, overlooking the main road. It features a tall dark stone monument topped with a cross fleury that rises from a tapering octagonal shaft. This shaft is set on the pedimented cornice of a tall pedestal, which has a square base.
The pedestal is designed with corners that resemble carved columns, and their abacus supports the pedimented cornice. Each side of the pedestal displays a red stone plaque. The main dedicatory inscription on the front reads: "THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY THE ALDERMAN’S GREEN SOLDIERS & SAILORS SOCIETY IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 OUR GLORIOUS DEAD" followed by the names of 11 individuals. The plaques on the other three sides begin with "THE MEN WHO SERVED" and list the names of those servicemen who returned.
