Description
The Methodist Central Hall, formerly listed as Central Hall, is a significant building located on Corporation Street in the City Centre, constructed between 1903 and 1904 by architects E and J A Harper. This three-storey structure features red brick and terracotta, with five bays on the left and seven on the right, highlighted by a tall slender tower. The ground floor includes shops, specifically nos 208, 214, 216, and 220, which retain their original shop fronts, along with a deep arched entrance porch adorned with impressive figure carvings.
Above the entrance, there are couplets of depressed arched windows situated above tall canted bay windows on the left side, while the right side showcases the main hall on the first floor, marked by large round-arched traceried windows above smaller bow windows. The building is topped with a parapet and small polygonal turrets, which differ in design between the left and right sides. The tower rises square and sheer, with detailed embellishments that match the lower facades. The return on Ryder Street mirrors the main façade and features more original shop fronts, notably No 5 and the corner shop at No 3.
