Description
Pype Hayes Hall is located in Pype Hayes Park and dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, featuring a stucco refacing of a house that originally had a timber frame from the 17th century. The building has undergone significant alterations in the late 19th and 20th centuries. It is two storeys high with an attic and has advanced flanking gabled wings that have been largely remodeled with stone gables and clustered chimney stacks. The front of the main range has parapet coping and features a row of 11 purely decorative gabled and bargeboarded dormers. There are four tiered 5-light mullioned-transomed bay windows and two cross-mullioned casements with hood moulds, all dating from the late 18th century and featuring lattice glazing. A stucco porch with a pediment supported by Tuscan columns has a rusticated architrave surrounding the doorway. The interior has been significantly altered, with little evidence remaining of the original timber frame, although there are reset elements of panelling and a 17th-century overmantel. Part of the staircase may be Jacobean. Notably, the poet Robert Southey visited this hall to work on his biography of Cowper.
