Description

Nos 360 and 362 Moseley Road are a semi-detached pair of two-bay, two-storey villas built around 1830-1840. They are faced with stucco and feature a hipped slate roof with flat eaves and a central corniced stucco chimney. The architectural detailing of the elevation is more elaborate than typical for modest villas. Each villa has an Ionic columned porch, supported by pilasters, with deep entablatures that extend across the front and are interrupted by a narrow break at the center, marked by a pair of identical Ionic columns backed by pilasters.

The bays between the porches have a channelled wall plane set behind the pilasters, with each bay containing an original shallow canted bay window featuring thin Soanian pilasters and a moulded sill that continues down to the base of the columns and pilasters. The front sash windows retain their glazing bars, with fixed pane sidelights. The blocking course of the Ionic entablature serves as the sill course for the first-floor windows, which are framed by eared architrave surrounds. There is a bed mould below the eaves and a dividing slit at the center of the first floor.

No 362 has a three-bay return, with architrave windows, the outer ones being blind, and the cornice returns as a sill course. The ground floor is channelled, and there is a blind basement. Additionally, there is a lower two-storey painted brick wing at the junction, featuring an architrave doorcase with console brackets supporting the cornice above. The front elevation of this pair of villas exhibits considerable sophistication.
