Description
The garden walls, gate piers, and gates located approximately 110 metres northeast of Wroxall Abbey Hotel are listed as a Grade II structure. The walls date from the early 18th century, while the gate piers were rebuilt in the late 20th century. The gates were likely brought in during the early 20th century by the architect Clough Williams-Ellis. The walls are constructed of red brick in stretcher bond and feature six half-oval bays, with urns on the piers at the junctions of the bays. The late 20th century brick gate piers rest on early 19th century stone bases and support wrought-iron gates with an overthrow.
Historically, the estate of Wroxall Abbey was purchased by Sir Christopher Wren in 1713, and while the walls are reputed to be associated with him, there is no documentary evidence confirming his visit to the estate.
