Description
The Abbey Ruins, located approximately 15 meters south of the Church of St. Leonard, are part of a building that dates back to the early 12th century, with alterations made around 1866 for James Dugdale. The structure is constructed from squared coursed stone, with some sections featuring 19th-century brick. It has an irregular plan, including a rectangular portion at the eastern end, and is a single-storey range. The east end features segmental pointed doors. Historically, the abbey was founded as a priory for Benedictine nuns around 1135. It is believed that part of this ruin represents the former priory frater, which includes a screens passage at the eastern end. This area may have been modified in 1866 when James Dugdale built the new Wroxall Abbey house, which now serves as the main building for Wroxall Abbey School.
