Description
Elizabethan House, located at 45 High Street, is a notable building dating from the 16th century. It features a prominent two-storey front with heavy timber framing and diagonal bracing. The house has projecting jettied gabled wings on either side, which are adorned with 19th-century barge boards. The smaller central flush gable appears to include a significant amount of facsimile framing. The lower part of the central bay and the entire right-hand gabled bay are constructed with closely set studding, while the left-hand jettied gable is made of square framing. The building has 19th-century chimney stacks and is topped with old tiles. The wall on the south side, facing Leycester Place, has been rebuilt in simple 19th-century brickwork, and there is a 18th-century brick wing with a stone plinth at the rear. Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase. This building is part of a group of listed buildings along the south side of High Street.
