Description
The Abbey ruins, located approximately 10 meters south of the Church of St Leonard, are part of a former abbey building that is now in a state of ruin. Likely dating from the early 12th century, these ruins underwent alterations around 1866 for James Dugdale. The structure is made of squared coursed stone, with some 19th-century brick incorporated. It has a rectangular plan and consists of a single-storey, two-bay range. There is a doorway on the west side, and the remains of a two-bay vaulted roof can still be seen. Historically, the abbey was founded as a priory for Benedictines around 1135, and this section of the ruins is believed to have been the former chapter house. It may have been modified in 1866 when James Dugdale constructed a new Wroxall Abbey house, which is now the main building of Wroxall Abbey School.
