Description
Kenilworth Castle is an important early 12th century keep featuring some of the earliest meurtrieres in existence. The castle includes early 13th century curtain walls and towers. A banqueting hall, built around 1391 by Robert Skyllington, is comparable to Westminster Hall, although it is now in ruins. There are also domestic buildings and a late 16th century barbican gatehouse that was converted into a residence in 1650 by Colonel Hawksworth, who inhabited it along with Lord Kenilworth. Additionally, there is a late 16th century timber-framed barn that incorporates the castle's curtain wall. The castle has historical associations with notable figures such as John of Gaunt and Queen Elizabeth. It is scheduled as an ancient monument.
