Description

The Warwickshire County Council Staff Club, also known as Northgate House and Northgate, is a significant late 17th century building, constructed in 1781. It features a two-storey structure with an attic and an eleven-window red brick facade adorned with stone dressings, although it is currently in poor repair. The windows are sashes set in cased frames, each with stone keyblocks.

The central section of the facade, which is three windows wide, projects forward and is topped with a triangular pediment that includes an elliptical sundial framed by a moulded architrave and four plain keyblocks. The central window on the first floor is highlighted by a heavy, bolection moulded architrave. Below this, on the ground floor, there is a large rectangular opening with fielded panelled doors set in plain brick reveals.

The building features a moulded cornice at the eaves, although it is in a decayed condition, along with a string band at the first floor, a plinth, and rusticated quoins, all made of local sandstone. Each side has four-window wings with dormers that alternate between triangular and segmental pediments. The doors are identical, featuring six fielded panels and semi-circular fanlights in plain reveals, though the glazing bars on the left-hand fanlight have been replaced.

Additionally, there are good, simple wrought iron railings surrounding the property. An elaborate 20th-century corbelled stone sundial, dated 1698, is located on the side facing Cape Road. The roof is hipped and covered with brindle tiles, likely added later, and the date 1698 is also noted on the rainwater head at the back of the building.
