Description

This is a classical monument located to the south-west of the tower of St Mark's Church in Rugby, dating from the mid-18th century. It is made of local pink sandstone and features a classical style with a semi-circular top. The west face is divided into two rectangular panels by three Doric pilasters that rest on a plain plinth with an entablature. The words 'IN MEMORY OF' are inscribed on the segmental pediment, although the letter 'N' in 'IN' is backwards. The inscriptions on the panels are largely illegible, but the name 'Sarah ?Wavell' can be discerned on the southern panel. The eastern face of the headstone is plain except for an inscription commemorating John Bosworth, who died in 1759, and his wife, Mary, who died in 1749. This headstone is an attractive example of the increasing influence of classical forms during this period, while still maintaining a rustic appearance.
