Description

The Newbold Arm Bridge, located over the Oxford Canal, was built between 1831 and 1834. This bridge carries the towpath across the Newbold arm and features a single span with a cambered deck made of prefabricated cast-iron plates. The haunches on both sides are inscribed with the manufacturer's name: HORSELEY. IRON. WORKS. The bridge has an openwork parapet made of moulded cast-iron railings that create a regular, elongated diamond pattern. It is supported by solid brick abutments and trailing edge wing walls topped with brick copings. The bridge was constructed as part of improvements to the Oxford Canal, with William Cubitt serving as the consulting engineer.
