Description
The barns, coach house, and wall located approximately 25 meters south of Shustoke House Farmhouse are a group of farm buildings dating from 1772, forming the north, west, and part of the south sides of a courtyard. The east side is enclosed by a red brick wall, while the south is bordered by a cattle byre. Access to the courtyard is from the south side. The buildings are constructed of red brick with varied bonding, including Flemish and English bonds, and feature plain-tiled roofs with parapet gable ends, except for the west end where the roofs are hipped.
The threshing barn on the north side of the courtyard has a gabled midstrey opening in the north wall, which includes a pigeon loft at the gable head, and a double recessed segmental arch above the midstrey opening. There are also breathers and pitch openings in the side walls. The threshing barn on the west side is similar but has a hipped roof and lacks a midstrey. Above the double recessed segmental arch in this barn is a dated sandstone panel, and the walls display a diaper pattern of breathers. At the south-west angle, there is another barn, now partly used as a piggery, which is two storeys high and features a wagon opening in the west gable under an elliptical arch.
Adjacent to the barn on the north side of the yard is a coach house from the late 18th century, built of red brick with a plain-tiled roof. It has a single cell plan, is one storey with an attic, and includes a gabled dormer above the segmental arch of the coach house doorways, which have boarded doors. An external dog-leg staircase with stone treads and coping leads to the coachman's quarters above the coach house, and within the brickwork of the staircase, there is a dog kennel.
Inside, the threshing barns on the north and west sides consist of five bays, including the wider wagon openings flanked by cross walls of brick with openings in two-centred arches. The other roof trusses are of the tie-beam type with braced king-posts and two tiers of through-purlins.
