Tunnel and tunnel portals on the Bim1mgham and Fazeley Canal. Late C.18. Probably Smeaton (engineer) .Red brick facing on natural stone. Semi circular arch with plain low parapet and retaining wall. Some patches of engineering brick repairs. Tunnel incorporates towpath with ridged brick "horse treads" to reduce slipping and wrought iron safety rail. A relatively early example of canal tunnel engineering. Engineered by Smeaton, the Binningham and Fazeley Canal was completed by 1794.
