Description
The stone seat located north-northwest of Brancote Farm is a wayside bench dating from around 1860. It was erected in memory of Thomas Hartshorne, who built Brancote Farm on the Tixall estate and served as County Surveyor. This bench, made of local red sandstone, features a moulded stone seat set on an inscribed riser with large scroll-shaped bench ends. The inscription commemorates Hartshorne and notes that these seats replace earlier wooden ones he provided for the comfort of travelers on the Tixall to Stafford road. This stone bench is one of two and serves as an unusual Victorian memorial.
