Description
Four Northwood Cottages is a cottage likely built around 1860, before 1877. It features whitewashed massed concrete with a plain-tile roof and brick ridge and end stacks. The building is single storey with an attic and has a cross wing to the left. The central entrance has a 20th-century door in a 20th-century porch, with a two-light casement window to the right and another two-light casement in the dormer above. To the left in the cross wing, there is a three-light casement window with a two-light casement above it. There is a small 20th-century single-storey extension on the left end. The right end is semi-detached with No. 3, which is constructed of brick and not included in this listing. Inside, the cottage has exposed joists. Number 4 is an early example of massed concrete construction, with the marks of the wooden slatting visible on the unplastered exterior walls. A Sutherland estate map from 1858 does not show the cottages, but they appear on the first large-scale Ordnance Survey map surveyed in 1877.
