Description
The farm buildings at Tixall Farm date from around 1830 and were built for the Clifford family of Tixall Hall. They are constructed of red brick with ashlar and brick dressings, featuring slate hipped roofs and a quadrangular plan. The main street front is two storeys high and consists of 17 bays, with a slightly projecting three-bay center. There is a central segmental carriage arch, above which is a three-light casement window, and above that is a square tower that contains a pigeoncote with corner turrets capped with pyramids. The tower has an ashlar plaque displaying a coat of arms, and above it is a round-headed recessed panel with flight perches and openings. The tower is topped by a hipped slate roof and an ornate wooden cupola with a weather vane.
On either side of the tower are single four-light windows, with three-light casements above. Further along, there are seven four-light windows with three circular pitching eyes above. To the north-east, there is a large hay barn connected by a buttressed wall, featuring five large segmental arches on either side and a single arch at each end, all topped by a hipped slate roof with a continuous ventilator. Behind the main range are three large cowsheds with round-headed arched entrances. Adjacent to the north-east is a large threshing barn that is now partially demolished, with only one segmental threshing arch remaining. To the north, the stable range has a two-storey seven-bay center under a hipped slate roof, with a central segmental arch flanked by stables with lofts above. On either side are single-storey wings; the left wing contains six implement sheds, while the right wing has additional stables.
