Description

Chartley Castle is a ruined structure dating from the early 13th century, situated within extensive earthworks. The site features a quadrangular enclosure with the remains of the keep located at one end on a motte. At the opposite end, there are two massive circular towers, each with walls approximately 12 feet thick and featuring slit openings. The area is heavily overgrown, making detailed examination difficult. Notably, Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here from January to September 1586.
