Description
Byanna is a building that likely originated in the early 17th century and was refashioned in the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features vertical bands of blue brick that rise from the first floor, simulating timber framing. The building is two storeys plus an attic, with the main front facing south. This elevation has two advanced bays with gables that project on stone corbels. It includes a series of stone mullioned windows with transoms, arranged in a pattern of three, two, two, and three, with the windows in the bays set in stone surrounds on corbels. Throughout the building, there are cast iron casement windows with diamond pattern glazing bars, and a stone stringcourse at the first floor level.
On the north elevation, there are two gables that also project on a stone corbel table. To the right, there is a projecting gabled porch that features a four-centred arched doorway, along with a single-storey wing on the right-hand side. A carved stone panel on the east side bears the date 1838, which relates to the two-storey porch bay added to the right. This bay has a similar character but features a stone ground storey and a plain doorway on the south side. The building has sprocket eaves and is covered with slate roofing.
Inside, the building boasts good moulded ceiling beams in the dining room and sitting room, with the latter room featuring 17th-century panelling and an over-mantel that is not in its original position.
