Description
The South Staffordshire Regimental war memorial was unveiled in 1922 and is dedicated to the South Staffordshire Regiment. Constructed of Portland stone, the memorial features a square, triple-stepped plinth surmounted by a square column with a single vertical groove in the centre of each face. Atop the column sits a triple-stepped pyramid, carrying a bronze sphinx.
The northeast-facing pedestal base dado bears an inscription that records the war service of the South Staffordshire Regiment across numerous campaigns, commemorating the service of its line, special reserve, territorial service, and garrison battalions in the Great War of 1914-1918 and the Second World War of 1939-1945. The northwest-facing pedestal dado lists 13 campaigns, dating from Guadaloupe in 1759 to South Africa in 1900-02. The southwest-facing pedestal displays the regimental insignia, consisting of a crown above a twisted length of rope and a banner bearing the regiment’s name. The southeast-facing dado is inscribed with the names of over 50 First World War battles and areas of conflict, alongside details of Second World War campaigns.
The memorial was unveiled on 30th September 1922 by the Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire, supported by Major General Sir Arthur Hoskins and dedicated by the Bishop of Lichfield. It is considered a poignant memorial to the regiment’s achievements and sacrifices and is designated at Grade II for its high quality, imposing appearance, and its representation of the regiment’s involvement in numerous conflicts. It also has group value with the war memorial commemorating the North Staffordshire Regiment.
