Description
The former barn, located approximately 150 yards east of Croxden Abbey, is now used as a cowshed with a hayloft. It likely dates back to the early 16th century but was largely rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The structure is made of rough-faced, squared, and coursed large stone blocks, topped with a clay tile roof.
On the northeast elevation, the barn stands two storeys high with nine roof bays. There are eight visible ground floor windows, although the left-hand end is obscured by a 20th-century concrete block shed. The windows alternate with blocked doorways, and there are seven boarded loft openings along with two ridge louvres on the right side. The west gable end features a sliding board door and a loft opening above.
Inside, the three eastern roof trusses are of 19th-century queen post construction, while the remaining five trusses may date back to the 16th century. These older trusses have two struts between the beam and collar, double purlins, curved wind braces, and a ridge piece that fits into a notch formed by the crossing of principals at the apex. There is evidence suggesting that the barn was originally timber framed, including surviving lengths of wall plate, one remaining wall post with a curved brace extending to the tie beam, and empty mortises and peg holes. The size of the building indicates it may have been associated with Croxden Abbey as a tithe barn.
