Description
The Old Mill is a disused corn mill located on Lower Hoar Cross Road. County records indicate that a mill has existed on this site since 1341, but the current structure likely dates from the late 16th century, with later alterations. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the main block containing the former mill house and a projecting gabled bay on the right side. It features a timber frame with mainly later brick infilling, and the timber frame is exposed in the upper storey of the main block. The roof is modern and covered with tiles, featuring two gabled dormers on the left. The right gable end is plain, with one later casement window and a simple doorway. To the left, there is a square-framed doorway with a ledged stable-type door.
Inside, the mill retains some exposed timber-framing, including king post trusses and framed partitions. Much of the original machinery is still present, including the drive shaft and gearing for two millstones. In the north-east corner of the building, there is an iron overshot mill wheel with wooden buckets.
