YOXALL LOWER HOAR CROSS ROAD The Old Mill

II

A disused corn mill. County records refer to a mill on this site in 1341 but the present building is of probably late C16 origin, with later alterations. L-shaped plan, the main block incorporating the former mill house and the mill having a projecting gabled bay on right hand side. Timber-framed and mainly later brick infilling, the timber frame-exposed in upper storey of main block. Modern tile roof with two gabled dormers to left. Plain gabled end to right with one later casement window and plain doorway. Square-framed doorway to left with ledged stable-type door.

The interior has some exposed timber-framing including king post trusses and framed partitions. Much of the original machinery remains including drive shaft and gearing to two millstones. At the north-east corner of the building is housed an iron overshot mill wheel with wooden buckets.
