Description

The Church of St Michael, built in 1796 by Thomas Telford, is a Grade II* listed building located on Church Street in Madeley. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a hipped slate roof, with an octagonal plan. The church has an entablature adorned with finials at the corners, and two tiers of windows separated by a string course, with round-arched windows above square windows.

At the ritual west end, the tower projects and is divided into four stages: the bottom stage is rusticated, the first stage has a pediment and a round arch window, the third stage features a clock face, and the top stage has a round-arched bell opening set in a recess, with ball finials on the corners of the parapet. A square chancel was added in 1910 at the ritual east end, which includes a large Venetian window. Flanking this chancel are two upper windows that are niches with responds, containing kneeling figures and an inscription below, which are remnants of a monument to the Brooke family of Madeley Hall.

Inside, the church has galleries on three sides supported by two tiers of columns. In the churchyard, there are several early 19th-century cast iron tombs, including those of two iron-plasters: William Balwin, who died in 1822, marked by a large pedestal with columns and a sarcophagus, and R R Anstice, who died in 1853, featuring arched inscription panels flanked by attached columns and a pediment above. Additionally, there is a cast-iron tomb chest for John Fletcher, who died in 1785, located immediately east of the church.
