Description
The Church of St George, built in 1861 by G E Street, is a large stone rubble church located on Church Street in Oakengates. The church features a nave with a clerestory that has lancet windows alternating with 2-light plate traceried windows. The west window consists of three lancets with trefoiled arches above, all set under a relieving arch. The north and south aisles also have lancet windows, while the chancel east window is notable for its five lancets and plate tracery. There is a north vestry and an unfinished south-west tower above a porch, which has a later top stage with a pyramidal roof. Inside, the walls are made of red, grey, and buff-coloured stone, with red brick dressings. The north and south arcades consist of four bays supported by octagonal, circular, and quatrefoil piers. The nave roof is a collar-beam design with arched braces, and the chancel roof features a brick pointed barrel vault with closely set stone chamfered ribs.
