Description

Holdgate Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that has undergone later alterations and rear extensions. It features a painted timber frame with painted brick infill panels set on a painted stone rubble plinth, with painted brick elements. The roof is a mix of slate and plain tiles, although it was originally thatched. There is a stone ridge stack with a 19th-century brick shaft, as well as integral brick gable-end stacks on the rear and side extensions. The building has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a two-bay front range, a side extension, and a three-bay rear wing.

The exterior is two storeys high, with raised eaves from the original single storey and attic. The street-facing side has square framing that is three panels high, raised to four panels in the 19th century, with tension braces. There are two 19th-century two-light partly leaded casements, each with a small gable above, and a two-light casement on the ground floor to the right.

On the left side, the gable end features square framing that is three panels high, raised to four panels in the 19th century, with remodelled truss framing. There are two-light casements on both storeys and a 20th-century stable-type door under a projecting curved hood. To the left, there are two bays of square framing that are three panels high, with eaves raised in the 19th century and a continuous brick panel. Each bay has a two-light casement on both storeys. The range continues to the far left with a single 19th-century brick bay.

The right side mirrors the left gable-end framing. The lower storey is partly covered by a single-storey tiled gabled extension wing. To the right, there are two bays of square framing that are three panels high, with eaves raised by one panel in the 19th century, and a two-light casement with a small gable above in the left bay. The lower storey is covered by a 20th-century glass-roofed lean-to, and to the far right is a continuation bay in brick, with a casement at each storey. The interior has not been inspected.
