Description
The Cruck Barn, located approximately 20 meters north-east of Binweston Farmhouse, is a tithe barn that dates back to the 14th or 15th century and was extended in the 17th century. It is currently used as a cowshed and has been encased in a 20th-century structure. The barn is cruck-framed, with its outer walls completely rebuilt using concrete blocks and topped with a slate roof. Originally, the tithe barn consisted of six framed bays, which were extended by an additional three or four bays to the north-east during the 17th century, and the entire structure is now enclosed by the 20th-century cowshed.
Inside, there are seven massive true cruck trusses, with four located to the south-west showing evidence of arch bracing, although only one truss retains the bracing. These trusses feature V-struts from collars and mortices for trenched double purlins. The three crucks to the north-east are less substantial and lack arch bracing, with the two north-easternmost crucks appearing to have been reconstructed with inserted tie beams. The final three trusses to the north-east are likely from the 17th century and include long raking struts from tie beams to principal rafters. The evidence for the north-east gable end has been destroyed due to late 20th-century rebuilding. The barn is listed as Grade II* for being a remarkable survival of a medieval agricultural building, which is not commonly found in Shropshire.
