Description
This small barn, located approximately 210 metres north of Lower Trefnant Farmhouse, dates from the late 17th century. It is timber framed with red brick nogging set on a red brick plinth and has a corrugated iron roof. The barn consists of two framed bays oriented roughly north-south. The framing features large square panels, with two extending from the sole-plate to the wall-plate, short straight corner braces on the north side, and long straight tension braces on the south side. There are boarded loft openings in the gable ends.
Inside, the barn has collar and cambered tie-beam end trusses with queen struts and V-struts. The roof is supported by single purlins, and there is a central cross-frame with a sole-plate resting on a low brick and rubblestone wall, long straight tension braces, a central post, and a cambered tie-beam truss with raking struts. The barn was once part of a larger complex, but the buildings to the east, shown on the Ordnance Survey map, have since been demolished.
