Description

Butter Cross is a plain stone structure dating from 1954. It features a shaft about 5 feet high, set on a circular base, with a round head that retains traces of a Maltese Cross on each face. While it is thought to mark the site of an ancient open-air marketplace, its location nearly a mile from the village suggests it was more likely used as a boundary cross during times of plague.
