Description

This barn, approximately 60 metres to the north-east of Manor Farmhouse, dates to the late 17th century. It is a timber-framed structure with weatherboarding set in grooves between the frame, resting on a chamfered red sandstone ashlar plinth displaying herringbone tooling. The roof is slate covered. The timber framing is arranged in square panels, with three panels extending from the sole plate to the wall plate, each featuring long straight tension braces. The barn comprises five framed bays. The north-west front has a pair of central boarded doors, alongside three boarded loft doors, while the south-east front features a pair of central boarded doors, a single boarded door to the right, and three boarded loft doors. Further boarded loft doors are located in the gable ends. Inside, the barn has tie-beam trusses with raking struts, and collar-and-tie-beam end trusses with queen struts, supported by pairs of purlins. The cross frames are built on low stone walls with sole plates, long straight tension braces, and central posts. Some reused timbers are visible within the structure. The location of the weatherboarding between the frame is unusual, although a contemporary example is known at Hodnet in North Shropshire.
