Description
Little Ness War Memorial is a commemorative structure honoring those who fell and served in the First World War. It was sculpted by Farmer and Brindley. The memorial features a square plinth made of Grinshill stone, supporting a cross and tapered octagonal shaft crafted from Portland stone. The shaft has a moulded band at both its top and bottom, and its square base, also of Grinshill stone, connects to the square plinth.
The principal front faces north, where the cross is designed as a crucifix with the figure of Christ positioned below a scroll inscribed with ‘INRI’. The plinth on this side displays the inscription: ‘GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS’. Below this, the names of nine individuals who fell in the war are listed, along with the phrase ‘JESU MERCY’ beneath their names. The east and west faces feature the inscription ‘THESE FOUGHT IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918’, with names listed below. On the south side, the names of those who joined up but did not see active service are recorded.
