Description

The former stable block, now used as school buildings, dates from 1840 and is possibly designed by E. Haycock. It is constructed from tooled grey sandstone ashlar and features slate roofs. The building has a square courtyard plan and is designed in the Neo-Tudor style, with one and two storeys. Notable architectural details include a chamfered plinth, moulded string courses, a parapet with moulded coping, and parapeted gables that have moulded copings and small globe finials.

The east front consists of two bays, three bays, and two bays, with chamfered stone-mullioned windows that have cast-iron lattice casements. The central gatehouse has three bays and a central gabled break, which features half-octagonal piers topped by carved horses' heads flanking a large continuously-moulded Tudor archway. This archway contains a pair of large four-panelled doors and is topped by a large carved Corbet coat of arms.

At the top of the building is a tall central octagonal wooden cupola with a lead-sheathed base, louvred round-arched openings with imposts, and an ogee lead dome topped with a globe finial and weathervane. The gable ends have first-floor stepped mullioned and transomed windows, along with small integral stone stacks. The flanking low ranges feature pairs of gables and stepped mullioned and transomed windows. The south range has nine windows and three gables, which alternate with large fleurs-de-lys on the parapet. The west end of the north range is canted with a gable.

Inside the courtyard, the gatehouse displays a shield dated "ACV/1840". The one-storey west range is supported on cast iron columns at the front and was formerly open but is now enclosed.
