Description

The former stable block, now farm buildings, dates to approximately 1787-8, and was probably designed by John Carline II of Shrewsbury. Constructed of red brick with grey sandstone ashlar dressings, it features a hipped slate roof and a square courtyard plan. The west (entrance) front has a 4:3:4 bay arrangement. A prominent eaved cornice is made of toothed brick. The central section has a triangular pediment containing a moulded stone cornice and a circular wooden clock within the tympanum. Above this is a square wooden bellcote with keyed round arches, a moulded cornice, an incurved lead cap, a globe finial, and a weathervane. Original glazing bar sash windows have gauged-brick heads and stone cills; some are painted imitations and others are blocked. A central elliptical carriageway arch is topped with raised stone impost blocks and a keystone, and is flanked by large wooden doors. The courtyard rear of the entrance range features a 2:3:2 bay arrangement, with a central break containing a triangular pediment, a clock in the tympanum, and an elliptical carriage arch with flanking doorways (the left-hand doorway being blocked). Side ranges are 5 and 6 bays respectively, and the rear range is 6 bays long. The north range and rear range each feature depressed-arched carriage doorways, some of which are blocked. Some windows have lost their original sashes or have been blocked. The building is set within a wider agricultural landscape. Later 19th-century and 20th-century additions adjoin the west front. Given that John Carline the Younger (1761-1835) designed the portico (built 1787-9) of Adderley Hall (which was later demolished and rebuilt in 1877) for Sir Clive Corbet, it’s possible he also designed the stable block. Adderley Hall Farmhouse is not listed.
