Description
The Guildhall in Much Wenlock dates back to around 1557 and features a timber frame with plaster. It is a single-storey building raised on an arcaded undercroft supported by oak posts with plain brackets. The undercroft consists of seven bays, which are closed off by 19th-century gates. The northern end of the undercroft is made of stone, likely from the late 14th century, and was originally used as a prison. The upper structure has three gables, with the right-hand gable being modern and built over a timber-framed passageway. Each gable contains tall, moulded wood mullioned and transomed six-light leaded windows, along with two smaller lights. The east side, or rear, has been significantly rebuilt in the 19th century, featuring an arcaded design and some brickwork, but the overall structure remains an excellent example of its type. It retains its original queen-post roof, along with Jacobean panelling and fittings, although much of this is no longer in its original position. The building has been recently well restored.
