Description
This is a disused mill located approximately 20 meters west of Pond House Farmhouse. It dates from the early 19th century and incorporates the north gable end of a demolished 17th-century millhouse. The structure is built of red brick and uncoursed limestone rubble, topped with a plain tile roof. It has three levels and features a dentilled eaves cornice. On the west side, there are segmental-headed window openings on the ground and first floors, along with a segmental-headed doorway on the right.
The south gable end includes the timber-framed gable end of the former millhouse, characterized by square panels and upper and lower collars to the roof truss. A plank door connects the house with the mill, and part of a red brick and stone bread oven and stack still remain. The north gable end showcases a massive cast-iron overshot wheel with wooden spokes, which was powered by water obtained through an iron pipe from a nearby moat.
Inside, the mill retains its gearing and cogs for grinding, as well as pulleys for lifting, along with corn bins and chutes leading to the third and second levels. The mill is situated at the southwest corner of the moat surrounding Pond House Farmhouse.
