Description

This is an early 19th-century two-story, one-bay dwelling situated on Old Road in Bromyard. The building runs parallel to the road and features a gabled extension to the rear. It is constructed of brick with a stone plinth, slate roof, and brick chimney stacks. The exterior of the principal facade at ground level has a door to the left and a window to the right. The door has fielded panels, with the two upper panels glazed, and is set within a moulded doorcase featuring pilasters and a pediment. The window is a canted bay with four-over-four hornless sashes and two-over-two sashes to the returns. A first-floor window, aligned with the ground floor window, is a four-over-four sash with an exposed frame flush with the facade and a painted flat arch. String courses run beneath each of the two windows. A cornice with widely-spaced dentils tops the eaves. Chimney stacks are located at either end of the pitched roof, which is shared with adjacent buildings. The interior of the property has not been inspected. Bromyard is a small market town first recorded around 840. No. 12 Old Road sits on a main thoroughfare that was historically known by different names, including Cruxwell Street, Corkeswalle Vicus, Croxewalle Streate, Sheep Street, and Old Road. The central area of the town, south and west of the church and around the market place, was largely built up by the 17th century, although some plots have been redeveloped since then. The building is designated at Grade II for its architectural quality, featuring elaborate details such as the doorcase and bay window, its well-preserved principal facade retaining historic fabric, and for its group value with other listed buildings in the vicinity.
