Description
A 17th-century dwelling, with later alterations, now used as commercial premises with accommodation above. The principal facade is red brick with stone detailing, while the side elevation is rendered, and rear extensions are of rough stone. The roof is slate, and a brick chimney stack is present.
The building is two bays and runs parallel to Cruxwell Street, oriented east-west. The road-side elevation displays a symmetrical arrangement. At ground level, a shop front occupies the space, featuring large four-light windows flanking a recessed central door with a glazed two-light return. A modern fascia covers the lower section, above a brick plinth. Each of the upper two storeys contains two windows, with the second-floor windows being smaller than those below. All windows have projecting stone cills and flat-arched brick lintels. A dentiled cornice runs below the eaves, continuing the style of the adjacent No. 1 Cruxwell Street.
The building dates back to the 17th century and was refronted in the 18th century. It has a 19th-century shop front and 20th-century alterations to the fascia and windows. The building’s origins are within Bromyard, a market town first recorded circa 840, located on a major thoroughfare that runs east from the vicarage and church. It was originally known as Corkeswalle Vicus in the late 13th century, and as Croxewalle Streate in 1575.
The building is designated at Grade II for its architectural interest—a well-proportioned facade retaining its historic layout—its early 17th-century origins with an 18th-century refronting, and its group value with the adjacent No. 1 Cruxwell Street, which share stylistic features. The interior was not inspected.
