Description

The building at 6 Cruxwell Street is a 17th-century, single-bay, two-storey dwelling located on a principal thoroughfare in Bromyard. It exhibits a timber frame construction with some brick infilling, topped with a slate roof and a brick chimney stack.

The exterior features a large, hornless, two-over-two sash window on the ground floor. The front door incorporates fielded panels in the lower half and a glazed upper half. A moulded cornice and a narrow, plain fascia run across the front façade. The first floor displays timber framing with an inserted six-over-six hornless sash window.

The interior has not been inspected.

Bromyard is a small market town, first recorded around 840. Cruxwell Street, known historically as Corkeswalle Vicus in the late 13th century and Croxewalle Streate in 1575, developed significantly by the early 17th century. The building dates from the 17th century and is currently used as domestic accommodation; the large ground-floor window suggests a previous commercial function.

The building is designated at Grade II for its architectural merit as a good example of a 17th-century house with a pleasing front façade and exposed timber frame. Significant features include a substantially intact 17th-century façade at first-floor level, with later refronting at ground-floor level. It also possesses historic interest as an early example illustrative of local vernacular building traditions. The building contributes to the group value of listed buildings in the centre of Bromyard.
