Description

Nos. 15-18 on Broad Street in Hereford are early 19th-century shops and dwellings. The buildings are finished in stucco and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The exterior features a late 19th-century shop front that includes a central recess with a glazed door and display cabinets, flanked by windows with moulded and enriched glazing bars. There are panelled soffits, moulded stall-boards and fascia-board, pilasters, and fluted consoles, along with an awning hood that has a cast-iron guard. The right side of the building is slate hung at the rear.

Inside, Nos. 15 and 16 have a 19th-century winder stair with turned newels, stick balusters, and a swan neck rail, leading to the cellar. On the second floor, there are two four-panel doors and one two-panel door. The first floor features a four-panel door and six-panel doors, with architraves around the doors and windows, and a picture rail. The ground floor fittings and display cases match the shop front, and the cellar is brick-lined.

No. 18 has a winder stair and on the second floor, there are massive exposed purlins and mutilated late 17th-century timber-framing. The first floor includes a corner stack with a 19th-century fireplace, architraves around the windows, a chamfered ceiling beam, and exposed studs. The cellar has some masonry lining and a brick partition wall.
