Description

This is a shop with residential flats above, dating to the 17th century, and displaying later alterations including a brick façade and a 20th-century shop front. The building is likely constructed from stone rubble and timber, with a red brick front. It is rectangular in plan and three storeys high.

The front elevation features two bays with a moulded eaves cornice. There are two windows to each upper floor; the first-floor windows are modern casements, and the second-floor windows are four/four sashed windows, all set within painted surrounds with projecting cornices supported by console brackets and shallow flush pediments. The ground floor features a double shop front with plate glass windows and timber frames, incorporating stall risers. A double-recessed lobby entrance has a glazed central door, with a further entrance to the right. The shop front has a stone fascia and pilasters in a modest Art Deco style. The interior has not been inspected.

Bromyard is a small market town first recorded around 840, and No. 8 Broad Street is located on a principal thoroughfare adjacent to the market square. The street was largely built up by the early 17th century, although some plots have been redeveloped since. No. 8 is a 17th-century building that has been re-fronted at a later date, with a shop front likely dating to the mid-20th century.

The building is designated at Grade II for its architectural merit as a well-preserved example of a modest but pleasant urban building, for its substantial intactness as a 17th-century building with a later façade and sympathetic 20th-century shop front, and for its group value with other listed buildings along Broad Street.
