Description
This is a shop with living accommodation above, dating to the 17th century, with later alterations including a brick façade and shop front. The building is likely constructed of stone rubble and timbers, with a red brick front, and features a timber and plate glass shop front. The rectangular building is three storeys high. The front is a two-bay colourwashed brick with moulded eaves. There are two sash windows to the first and second floors, set within recessed surrounds with projecting cills, and fitted with replaced sashes containing a single pane each. The ground floor has a double shop front with plate glass windows and stall risers, flanked by pilaster strips and carved corbels to either side of the fascia. A lobby entrance is present with a half-glazed central door. The interior has not been inspected. The building sits on one of the main streets in Bromyard, a small market town first recorded around 840, and adjoins the market square. The street was likely completely built up by the early 17th century, with some plots having been redeveloped since. The original building was timber-framed, but was re-fronted at a later date and given an inserted ground-floor shop front, probably dating to the early 20th century. It is designated at Grade II for being a well-preserved example of a modest urban building, for its substantial intactness as a 17th-century building with a sympathetic later façade and shop front, and for its group value with other listed buildings in Broad Street.
