Description
Merton House is an early 19th-century building, formerly known as the Merton Hotel, located on the west side of Edde Cross Street. Tradition, though unconfirmed, suggests it was named after Merton Place in Surrey and was frequented by Lady Hamilton and Nelson. The building is two storeys high with a hipped slate roof that appears relatively flat. It has three sash windows with projecting sills on the front elevation. Flanking the main building are single-storey wings with flat roofs and large round-headed windows. A balcony with iron railings and French windows is at the first floor of the rear elevation. French windows with Venetian shutters are present on the ground floor. Internally, two rooms feature ceilings divided into panels by small moulded wooden strings, and one room contains heraldic shields at the panel joints, reportedly brought from Surrey.
