Description
High Gate is a small house dating from the late 17th to early 18th century. It features a timber-frame structure with brick infill panels, straight braces on some posts, and one small full cruck blade, which suggests there was once a cross range at the northwest end. The northwest end has a roughcast finish, and the building has a continuous asbestos-tiled roof. The southeast end has large local stone stacks with a detached brick shaft, which is now surrounded by a mid-20th century brick and weatherboard extension. The house is two storeys high with two bays and has random 20th-century casements. The entrance is located on the southwest side, to the right of the northwest bay, accessed through a 20th-century door. Inside, there are close-set beams, and in the southwest wall of the upper northwest room, part of a small low roof truss can be seen, which does not correspond with the existing building or the cruck, indicating some significant remodellings have occurred.
