Description
The Upper Hall is part of Ledbury Grammar School, comprising a late 17th-century south wing and a later north wing. The south wing is constructed of brick with a tiled, hipped roof featuring a modillioned eaves cornice. It extends over two storeys, with an attic and cellars. A band runs between the storeys and rises as a pediment above the east doorway. Original wood mullion and transom casements with glazing bars are present. Hipped dormers are also visible. The interior includes an original staircase with moulded strings, twisted balusters, square newels, and a panelled dado.
The adjoining north wing, dated to the late 18th or early 19th century, is also of brick construction with a hipped tiled roof. It is three storeys high with five windows, featuring sash windows with glazing bars set within flat brick arches, and stone moulded architraves to the central door, topped with a cornice on console brackets. Inside the north wing is a hall with an arcade on panelled piers, a modillion cornice, and doorcases with shouldered architraves. A later 19th-century addition exists on the northeast side. The building formerly served as the residence of the Lay Vicars of Ledbury Church and was converted for use as a school.
