Description
The Church of St Michael, located in Upper Sapey, dates from the mid to late 12th century. It consists of a nave, chancel, west tower, and south porch. The chancel and nave feature 12th-century north and south doorways. The church underwent restoration between 1859 and 1860, during which the chancel arch was rebuilt, and the south porch and west tower were added, featuring a broached truncated pyramid roof and spire. The original 12th-century chancel arch was re-erected as the tower arch. Inside, there is a pulpit with carvings from the 17th and 19th centuries, created by John Kitchen, who worked around 1860. The church also contains four plain early 16th-century benches, modified with 19th-century work, and two early 17th-century benches with panelled ends. The panelled dado is made up of early 17th-century material, and there is a 13th-century font.
